Many thanks to James for the following analysis of the script based on the various Japanese resources (spoken dialogue, original script and shooting script in the Memorial Box set). The original language of the script is Japanese, so it should be safe to assume that such nuances as are present are those originally intended.
What I've done is take the English subtitles file, and gone through listening to the Japanese dubbed
soundtrack and translating it. This turned out to be a time-consuming job! Where I've changed it I've put
square brackets around the old line, and put my version underneath. This makes it easy to compare the two,
but harder to read sequentially. In a couple of places I have put comments in curly brackets.
The original English subtitles appear to have been translated from the Japanese subtitles. As I said before,
the dubbed Japanese is a bit different. This is actually mentioned in the "Avalon: An Inside Look" booklet
in the DVD box. The subtitles had to be more compact because of restrictions on the number of characters.
For the dubbing, the script used was much closer to the original one (in the pre-production book),
using more natural spoken Japanese.
I looked at the comments on the script page of your web site. I think Ben Rudiak-Gould is right about
"ask and it shall be given" being more correct than "seek and ye shall find", and I've made that change.
The words Bishop uses aren't quite a direct quote from the bible (at least not any of the Japanese
translations that are available online), but it's very close. I don't actually think the distinction
makes a great deal of difference though. The comment by Vogel that the reference to a story involving
'Odin' should be 'Ogier' is definitely right.
